First Africa meets Latam Tech Meetup takes place in NY |
Facebook is now growing faster than ever as with its current funding and worth.
The social networking site had gained a new funding that is worth $500 million: Goldman Sachs gave $450 million while Russian investment firm Digital Sky Technologies have $50 million. Aside from that, it has gained more than $800 million from previous five fundings and when totalled, they have raised $1.3 billion. And now that we have seen the fundings, how much do you think it’s worth.
When Goldman Sachs sealed the deal with FB, it promised that it will help raise $1.5 billion by creating a “special purpose vehicle” that will allow other people to invest on the biggest social networking site in the Internet. When this happens, it will help Facebook bypass the SEC regulation which requires companies with more than 499 investors to reveal to the public their financial statements.
Now that we know what Facebook is worth and how much they have gained, we ask now? What will they do with that big money they have now?
Well, we all know that Google is FB’s greates rival now as well as Microsoft. One of the theories that people are thinking is that it might use $2 billion of its new funding to cash out on its investors and employees. Second is all about the growth of Facebook. Since we’re pretty sure they want to beat Google as the bigges internet company, there might be plans on getting an expansion and hiring more employees.
In terms of expansion, one trusted source tells that it plans to purchase the Sun Microsystems campus in Menlo park, California from Oracle Corporation to have more room for their future plans. When it comes to hiring, Facebook should really do this as they only have around 2000 employees, which is very small for company that serves 500 million users and is worth $50 billion. This is one thing that they need to revamp in order to beat Google. Then it will also use its other funding for new acquisitions in 2011.
We hope Facebook will also feature new products since their rivals have already done that and are ruling the web more. Expansions such as emails, ads displays, news and more are what we expect Facebook will do to expand. They should not only focus on social networking and reach out to other markets as well. This is something to look forward to.

Archeologists have unearthed what looks like a cone-shaped alien skull from 1,000 years ago in Mexico.
The skull, which dates from 945 A.D. to 1308 A.D., was discovered accidentally while digging an irrigation system in the northwest state of Sonora in Mexico.
Cristina Garcia Moreno, who worked on the project with Arizona State University, explained that 13 of the 25 skulls found in the Hispanic cemetery had these deformed heads.
“We don’t know why this population specifically deformed their heads,” Moreno told ABC News.
The site, known as El Cementerio, was discovered in 1999, but the team just completed their analysis of the skeletal remains last month. They plan to continue their research during the next field season. Archaeologists also discovered artifacts on the site, like pendants, nose rings and jewelry.
They said the deformation of human skulls was part of an ancient ritual that took place 1,000 years ago. The deformation was achieved by binding a person’s head between two blocks of wood to apply pressure on the skull by wrapping the wood with bands.
“Cranial deformation has been used by different societies in the world as a ritual practice, or for distinction of status within a group or to distinguish between social groups,” Moreno told ABC News. “The reason why these individuals at El Cementerio deformed their skulls is still unknown.”
The team said that many of the bones unearthed were the remains of children, leading them to believe the practice of deforming skulls “may have been inlet and dangerous.”
The Chinook of the U.S. Northwest and the Choctaw of the U.S. Southeast both were known for practicing skull deformation as well.
Moreno told ABC that people deformed their heads in Mexico because they wanted to distinguish important people, or they wanted to distinguish people from one group from another.

A typical tablet processor, image credit Mactrast.com |
Obviously I, being a huge fan of all things Heiny and her “What is New” blog, quickly followed my brief instructions and had a look around. Upon initial investigation it seemed that Jumping Minds had done all they can to take Ink Gestures up a notch - I downloaded my free trial and installed it on my favorite slate.
The following is a screen capture of InkGestures Version 1.1; an application that enhances the normal Microsoft Word Document experience by empowering your intentions via gestures. The gestures can be made by mouse, but most importantly by Tablet PC pen too. When combining the application with one of my Tablets I felt the experience was enjoyable enough to share with you all.

It only gets better inside - smells like retail
Finally...we have Vega
Since I’ve owned my Vega I proudly reported that I completely avoided the need to buy an iPod. Not that I hate iPod, I do believe that there is little that could ever compete with the look, however, without an Operating System I can’t see the point. The Vega now sits in my car and plays my VLOGS and BLOGS happily, and even simultaneously, and I only need to charge it once a day due to its 5.5hrs batter life (7hrs + if I turn of the screen via hotkeys) ...Apple meet iVega!
SO perhaps Neil was right, these products should be in Retail.
